Having won over 80 awards, James Cameron’s Avatar (2009) is the highest-grossing film of all time (Birkin 30). It tells the story of the blue-skinned Na’vi, inhabitants of an alien planet called Pandora, who are attacked by a group of humans from Earth. Eventually, the human protagonist Jake Sully turns against his own people and helps the natives defeat the invaders. By looking at the movie from a meta level, it is argued that it promotes a stereotypical representation of race by depicting Whites as superior to other races. The idea of a white supremacy is especially conveyed in Avatar through the white protagonist Jake Sully. At the beginning of the movie, Neytiri, who is the Na’vi tribe leader’s daughter, introduces Jake to the rest of her people, explaining that she did not kill him due to a sign by their God Eywa (Avatar, 00:45:45). Thus, the viewer is left with a feeling that Jake must be special for some reason, which is further supported due to his immediate integration into the tribe. Although Jake is supposed to be the alien, who only just landed on Pandora, he makes fast progress and is soon able to climb and hunt like the natives. He learns their language and is eventually considered one of them. Meanwhile, Jake falls in love with Neytiri, and the two of them engage in a relationship (Avatar, 01:24:50), even though she was originally promised to a Na’vi man. In addition, Jake is the only one who can ride the dragon-like bird Toruk (Avatar, 01:53:32), a performance that only five people managed to do before him (Avatar, 01:18:26). In summary, Jake is portrayed as superior to the indigenous people since he is easily able to outdo the Na’vi in all areas of life. Despite the movie being fictional, the Na’vi resemble stereotypical images of real ethnic groups. Susana Loza observes that â€Å"[t]heir [†¦] nearly naked blue bodies are [†¦] decorated with Maori tattoos and Maasai-style necklaces and beaded jewelry. Their long, dark hair is adorned with feathers and either worn in mohawks or dreadlocked† (54-55). Thereby, Loza suggests that the Na’vi combine different elements of minority cultures in their appearance. One example is Neytiri who wears a stretched ear piercing, which is common in many African cultures. Likewise, David Brooks notes that â€Å"[t]he peace-loving natives – compiled from a mà ©lange of Native American, African, Vietnamese, Iraqi and other cultural fragments – are like the peace-loving natives you’ve seen in a hundred other movies†. His point is that indigenous tribes are often portrayed in stereotypical ways and that this stereotypical representation also applies to the Na’vi, who are depicted as illiterate savages living in close touch with nature. For instance, they frequently use animal-like noises or hissing sounds, making them appear rather primitive. Moreover, it is noticeable that the actors who play the main Na’vi characters are all people of color (Birkin 31). All of this contributes to the impression that the Na’vi are not a completely fictional tribe, but they are indeed a composition of existing minority cultures. Even more important is that Avatar draws on the genre of a white savior film. â€Å"The ‘white savior’ film [†¦] centers on a white protagonist whose main role [†¦] is to rescue peoples of color from outside invaders, from inside threats, and from themselves† (Bausch 914). In Avatar, the Na’vi need Jake to save them from the attack of the other humans. Without his assistance, the tribe is completely helpless and naà ¯ve. For example, the Na’vi try using bows and arrows to fight against flying tanks (Avatar, 01:38:55), or they sing and pray instead of creating a plan to defeat the enemy (Avatar, 01:53:00). Only when Jake joins their army and provides them with mechanical weapons and a strategy are they finally able to defend themselves. Hence, Jake is portrayed as the white savior of non-white people who are apparently incapable of handling problems themselves, which is an idea that is clearly offensive towards indigenous people. All in all, Avatar reinforces the common notion of Whites being superior to other ethnic groups by producing stereotypical impressions about race. However, Avatar is no exception since the topic of the white savior comes up in several movies (cf. Bausch 914-918). These kinds of movies provide white viewers with the chance to identify with the (apparently) good-hearted white people, while being able to distance themselves from the violent doings of their American ancestors. Although people commonly consider themselves to be tolerant and open-minded, Avatar serves as an example which suggests that we must still be careful with hidden racism in ‘white savior’ movies. Also, with over $363 million chickens in the US, the market size to promote this product to is rather substantial. Considering the limited resources available to ODI and the desire to make an impact in the market prior to other firms Joining them in 2-3 years time when they would be in a position to market a comparable product, aiming for the right market segments and entering with the ight price are paramount to success. In order to avoid literal henpecking, farmers are having the chickens beaks cut off. For many weeks, these chickens deliver a sparse yield of eggs, beaks though not only traumatizes the chickens, but also alters the way chickens naturally consume food, making it more difficult to eat their grain. Thus, farmers are required to overstock the chicken feed, ultimately leading to food being wasted (as a cost to the farmer). Taking all of this into consideration, it is clear that the desire for farms to have a means of reducing these problems is very high. Product Characteristics With chickens being social birds, they follow a social structure; a literal pecking order. The dominant birds peck the submissive ones and the pecking goes on increasing to the point of cannibalism. While the method of debeaking has proven effective, as mentioned, there are side effects. The ODI lens on the other hand does not have these side effects. The lens reduces the vision of the chicken to roughly 12 inches, forcing the chickens to constantly have their beaks down to search for food or their pathway to wander, in turn making it very difficult to differentiate between the ubmissive chickens from the dominant ones. This is essentially the reason for mortality rates being reduced to as little as 4. 5%. Of key concern to farms would be value proposition of this new product and process. Of great importance is the fact that the rate at which chickens have lenses inserted is roughly the same as the rate at which chicken can be debeaked (225 per hour vs. 220), in turn ensuring that the cost of this process is equal to that of the debeaking process. He reconsidered the approach of looking more professional as he used to look back as his day as a stock broker and cut his long hair, stop smoking marijuana, and started to wear business suits again. Harvey Milks new approach earned him the support of the teamsters, firefighters, and construction unions (Epstein 1984). Harvey changed his Castro Camera from a small rinky dink shop to become the center of activity in the neighborhood (Epstein 1984). Milks fiery, flamboyant speeches and savvy media skills earned him a significant amount of press during the 1973 election. He earned 16,900Â  votes-sweeping the Castro District and other liberal neighborhoods and coming in 10th place out of 32Â  candidates (Shilts 67:1982). One of Harveys last changes was the possible manipul ation of reorganizing to allow districts to elect their own supervisors which allow him to win a seat on City assembly (Epstein 1984). Also during the time of Harvey the spirit or the mood of San Francisco was probably a lot raunchier and sexually open because they did not quite know about AIDS and the repercussion of unsafe sex. The Castro the main gay community was just starting to get its beginnings and was being fought for. Michelle Teas era of San Francisco was probably based in the late 90s as of the reference she made of crack cocaine, Where is Waldo, and finally the reference about O.J Simpson that was a clear giveaway. The mood of San Francisco was that of awareness because of the AIDS and other STD epidemics going around people werent as raunchy or having polygamous sexual relationships. The gay community also had its issues with drugs; suffering already from heroin which was already around since the 70s in the Castro but with the invention of crack cocaine, Methamphetamine and the rise in popularity of powder cocaine effectively altered the mood of San Francisco gay environment. The Castro during the 90s was by Michelles time a predominately gay community with its own businesses and residents. I believed that Michelle Tea and Harvey Milk each felt or thought about San Francisco as a safe haven for their sexuality were they could openly express their homosexuality and not be persecuted Because in the environment they were in everyone was gay; if not people learned to accept their homosexuality for what it was. A Soft Drink Tax According to John Stuart Mill Essay

The Coca-Cola brand has built itself into a staple of American culture. This is a terrifying thought for public health advocates who see Coke and other soft drinks as being major culprits behind a growing national health crisis. Empirical evidence shows that over-consumption of soft drinks clearly causes harm to the individuals who consume them, however, the waging battle over soda legislation will not be won on the grounds of health alone. The argument that Coca-Cola, Pepsi, and other soft drink firms present is deeply rooted in American values and cannot easily be trumped. What they argue for is freedom of choice. In his book On Liberty, John Stuart Mill states, â€Å"over himself, over his own body and mind, the individual is sovereign† (9). If an individual chooses that he wants to drink soda pop, he should be allowed a high degree of liberty to make that decision. Such is the foundation of a soft drink firm’s purported right to exist. If consumers demand it, Coca-Cola executives will get as red in the face as their soda cans stating that they play an innocent and vital role in fulfilling that demand. One method through which public health advocates wish to regulate soft drinks is in the implementation of a soda tax. Advocates for such a tax may argue that individuals who harm themselves by overindulging in soda should be limited in their consumption. Since supply and demand are sensitive to market conditions, a tax would undoubtedly lower the quantity of soda demanded, particularly in low-income families where obesity and diabetes are most common. Mill claims that â€Å"to tax stimulants for the sole purpose of making them more difficult to be obtained is a measure differing only in degree from their entire prohibition, and would be justifiable only if that were justifiable. Every increase of cost is a prohibition to those whose means do not come up to the augmented price; and to those who do, it is a penalty laid on them for gratifying a particular taste† (99). Soft drink firms would cite Mill here in their argument that individuals’ â€Å"choice of pleasures and their mode of expending their income, after satisfying their legal and moral obligations to the State and to the individuals, are their own concern and must rest with their own judgment† (99). While Mill’s line of reasoning would appear to speak against a soft drink tax, he goes on to remind us that â€Å"taxation for fiscal purposes is absolutely inevitable†¦ It is hence the duty of the State to consider, in the imposition of taxes, what commodities the consumers can best spare†¦ [and] to select in preference those of which it deems the use, beyond a very moderate quantity, to be positively injurious† (100). Being that over-consumption of soda pop is certainly injurious to the consumer, and especially in light of the current economic downturn in this country, Mill would approve of a soft drink tax as an effective means through which to produce revenue for the State. While a tax on soft drinks would be permissible by Mill’s standards, some proponents of soft drink legislation would go so far as to ban their sale altogether. However, even if the vast majority of the public were motivated to impose such a ban, Mill would hesitate to condone such a severe form of coercion. The basis for Mill’s harm principle is that â€Å"the only purpose for which power can be rightfully exercised over any members of a civilized community, against his will, is to prevent harm to others† (9). Although soft drink firms have a clear interest in â€Å"promoting intemperance† (99) in order to generate profit, those firms will argue fervently that the consumption of soda is not such a great evil that the State would be justified in â€Å"imposing restrictions and requiring guarantees which†¦ would be infringements of legitimate liberty† (99). Therefore, in order to present a stronger argument for a ban on soft drinks, advocates would do well to prove that in drinking soda pop, individuals cause harm not only to themselves, but also to others. To consume soft drinks to the point of excess can lead to the deterioration of an individual’s health. This may appear to be a self-regarding action until one considers the cost such individuals impose on taxpayers. Citizens whose unhealthy lifestyles regularly land them in the hospital eat up government health care, at which point their actions cease to be self-regarding and become harmful to society at large. With this in mind, are we still to protect individuals’ liberty to drink soda pop? Soft drink firms may point to Mill in arguing that the accountability for such harm lies not with soda, but with the society that raises gluttonous individuals. If grown people are incapable of properly taking care of themselves, society must consider that it â€Å"has had absolute power over them during all the early portion of their existence; it has had the whole period of childhood and nonage in which to try whether it could make them capable of rational conduct in life† (80). It is on this point that we must consider the role that mass media plays in the world today. The pervasiveness of corporate advertising in the U. S. manipulates children’s impressionable faculties of reason, subverting the ability of even responsible parents and educators to impart rational consumption habits on their young ones. Mill writes that he could not see how people could witness an act of self-harm and think it â€Å"more salutary than hurtful, since, if it displays the misconduct, it displays also the painful or degrading consequences which, if the conduct is justly censured, must be supposed to be in all or most cases attendant on it† (81). This argument is undermined by the fallacy of soft drink advertising, which positively portrays the act of drinking soda without showing the adverse long-term effects of its consumption. When a world-class athlete endorses soda pop, susceptible consumers, particularly children, are inclined to associate soft drinks with scoring goals and dunking basketballs rather than with cancer and heart disease. In arguing against the proliferation of soft drinks, one should appeal to a fundamental component of Mill’s doctrine, which states that his harm principle does not apply to â€Å"children or of young persons below the age which the law may fix as that of manhood or womanhood. Those who are still in a state to require being taken care of by others must be protected against their own actions as well as against external injury† (9). In other words; children do not have the maturity to make rational, informed decisions that lead to actions that could potentially cause them harm, for instance, the act of guzzling down a 99 cent Coke. The American Beverage Association would echo John Stuart Mill in saying that â€Å"human beings owe to each other help to distinguish the better from the worse, and encouragement to choose the former and avoid the latter† (74). It is their argument that parents and educators, not government, are responsible for dissuading children to consume soft drinks. Indeed, parents and educators can form a partnership in banning the sale of soft drinks in schools, but it is beyond their power to prevent a non-responsible child from seeing a deviously enticing soda ad on TV and irrationally choosing to spend his or her allowance on soda pop. Therefore, the State would be justified in regulating children’s access to soft drinks by legally coercing soft drink firms to discontinue their advertisements geared toward children, as well as by imposing a minimum age requirement for the purchasing of soft drinks.

Usually the goal is to increase foreign direct investment, development of infrastructure and to increase employment. † – Wikipedia On September 10, 2012, at an impressive ceremony at the Presidency, Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari gave his consent to the Special Economic Zone Bill 2012. The journey from conception to signing took four long years but it was worth the wait. It all began when Pakistan Japan Business Forum, a bilateral Forum that I helped establish, floated the idea of a dedicated SEZ for the Japanese investors. The ball got rolling when Salim Mandviwalla, the energetic Chairman of Board of Investment embraced this idea and motivated his team to prepare an attractive SEZ package. It was approved in 2008 by the Economic Coordination Committee of the Cabinet while the Federal Cabinet accorded approval in principle for initiation of legislation in 2010. The Council of Common Interests also discussed this bill due to introduction of 18th Amendment. CCI approved the bill in August 2011. The Senate accorded approval in January 2012 and National Assembly on July 13, 2012. The Act would allow Developers and Zone Enterprises to plan and operate in an enabling environment that would include security, safety, availability of physical and social infrastructure, and access to all incentives, facilities, and rules of business. The central aspect of the Act is the formation of a high-powered Board of Approval with the Prime Minister as the Chairman. This, in itself, manifests total commitment towards development and success of SEZs. The salient features of the Act include the approval of Zones not less than fifty acres. Upto 30% of the Zone could be used for social infrastructure. This would be attractive for those investing and working in any particular Zone. The government would ensure the provision of public utilities and transportation links upto the zero point of the Zone. Furthermore, the government would promote the adoption of simplified administrative procedures for SEZs with relevant Federal and Provincial authorities and agencies. Such facilitative procedures include issuance of licenses, permits and approvals, satisfactory customs and other documentary requirements, easy fulfillment of tax or duties obligations, and support and authorization of modern means of communication and e-governance. The country’s labor laws would be equally applicable to the Zone Enterprises too. Moreover, the Board of Approval may, after consultations with concerned Ministries and governmental agencies, issue special rules for employment of non-Pakistanis in key managerial and technical positions. These relate to issuance of visas, temporary residence permits, as well as temporary work permits. Their dependents would be facilitated though these special rules. Each Zone shall be designated either as a Free Trade Zone, Export Processing Zone, Multilateral Economic Zone, Regional Development Zone, Reconstruction Opportunity Zone, Hybrid Export Processing Zone, Sector Development Zone, or Extra-Territorial Zone depending on specified characteristics. An ETZ would be out of the ambit of the customs territory of Pakistan so that transportation of goods and provision of services from and to these areas and to and from the customs territory of Pakistan shall be considered as export and import. They would get the same treatment for rebates and other advantages. All incentives under this Act shall be in addition to all incentives, benefits and protections that may be applicable to Developers and/or Zone Enterprises under generally applicable legislation and international agreements of Pakistan. These benefits shall not be withdrawn prematurely and any changes shall be to the advantage of the Developer or the Zone Enterprise. Developers shall be entitled to the following benefits: (a) One time exemption from all customs duties and taxes for all Capital Goods imported into Pakistan for the development, operation and maintenance of a SEZ entity, subject to verification and approval from Board of Investment. (b) Exemption from all taxes on income accruable in relation to the development and operation of the SEZ for a period of ten years, starting from date of signing of the development agreement. It would be advisable to utilize the expertise available at Karachi Center for Dispute Resolution to prepare an effective mechanism for a mediation process so that the investors and developers can utilize their energies towards the success of their endeavors. The future benefits of the Act for Zone Enterprises would be immediate savings in taxes, duties, and other front-loading charges, a safe and secure working environment, preferential treatment of products and services (such as Reconstruction Opportunity Zones concept initiated by US Government but remains in limbo till this day), and, more importantly, accessible domestic and global markets. The various bilateral Forums, FPCCI, the Chambers and Associations, as well as Pakistani diplomats based in foreign countries must promote the SEZ Act. The Prime Minister should order the setting up of SEZ Authority and advise the provincial governments to set in motion plans to establish the Provincial SEZ Authority in their respective provinces. Hopefully, Chairman BOI must have set up the relevant infrastructure in the Board so that the foundation for implementation of the Act is firmly established. In the year 1980 text based RPG named Rouge which featured ASCII graphics and deep system of gameplay popularized RPG for Computer users. The older editions of Ultima and Wizardry which were released in 1983 acted as role models for more popular console RPG. A large amount of its gameplay innovations are still considered standard for current gen RPGà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s. Mid 1980 also was the period of emergence for Action Role Playing games in computers.
